Guinea Pig Mating
Guinea pig mating may cause a chuckle or two; the male can be aroused at any time by almost anything; you may be able to get pictures if you so desire; some farms raise, care for, breed, and feed them.
These animals breed for about five times a year. Females should be first bred between 3 and 7 months of age and males should be 3-4 months old at their first breeding. The females usually give birth to 1-7 young in a litter with an average number of 3-4 young in a litter. The babies are born relatively mature; with open eyes and fully furred; they also have teeth and can walk about. The young are about 70-100 grams at birth. They usually start eating solid food when only 2 or 3 days old, though they nurse for 2 - 3 weeks.

In captivity these animals should live in pairs. It is not recommended to place a sow and a boar together because of their high reproductive abilities. If you decide to neuter your animal, first of all consult a veterinarian specializing in small animals. Some serious problems with a sow may appear during the gestation period. If a sow is bred for the first time after 7 months of age, she can have difficulties with delivery and a cesarean section will be required. Overweight sows can suffer from pregnancy toxemia. It is a serious condition, which can lead to the death of the animal.
