Free Guinea Pig
A free guinea pig, bird or other small pet can sometimes be obtained from a breeder that may have overstock.
There are a few types of the species. They differ in coat coloring, length, and some other physical attributes. Usually, they are active and alert. The average life span of the species is about 5-7 years, yet some individuals may live for as long as 12 years. Being herbivores, these animals feed on vegetation. In captivity they should always have a good daily supply of grass or hay. These are very sociable animals in the wild they survive through the use of effective herd communication and very rapid reproduction, but are able to establish the safest routes and learn them perfectly. In captivity there should necessarily be at least two cavies of the same sex in the cage.

If you are interested in adopting a small rodent, this may be a good pet for you. There exist many various kinds of these animals, but what you need is a short haired variety, which is easy to look after and just as pretty as their long haired cousins. Contact rescues and inquire about the availability of the pets. Expect rescue members to ask you a few questions concerning the care for the species and whether you have experience of owning the species. This is not a toy, so don't take a cavy if you are not sure that you will be able to provide it with everything that is needed.
