It is not recommended to buy a cavy until you learn as much as possible about these animals. Never place the mature boars in one cage; they should be kept separated as they are bound to be aggressive. When the young cavy boars reach maturity, severe battles occur between them and the leader. Just remember that when keeping these animals as pets it is very important to separate sexually mature cavies; the females may also be rather aggressive and they also can fight for rank. Young cavies are rather active and may try to jump out of your hands. So, when holding them in hands you have to be very careful and attentive otherwise the fall can lead to broken bones and internal injures.

All these animals require regular grooming and nail clipping. If you have such an animal you probably know that the hardest part of nail clipping is holding the pet still. If you like, you may use human nail clippers, but try to be very careful in order not to injure the animal. You should do this procedure at least once a month. But if you feel that nail clipping is necessary, you may do it more often. No matter how careful you are, accidents sometimes happen.
