In the wild these rodents inhabit grassy areas. They are social creatures and live in small family groups. The groups consist of several females, one male, and the young. Females of these animals are called sows, males are called boars, and the young are pups. These animals mate for life in the same pair bonds. These rodents cannot see clearly at a distance; they have no depth perception; and their ability to access distances and heights is limited. But they have color-vision and are able to notice the slightest movement.

Many years ago these animals only lived in South America where the local people used them for food. Nowadays, these animals are among one of the cutest small pets in the world. Cavies are rather large for rodents; they weigh between 1 and 3 pounds and measure 10-15 inches long. Their average life expectancy is 4-8 years. In captivity, it is recommended to keep them in groups, because they get lonely on their own. The groups must be of the same sex: groups of sows, or groups of (a) sow(s) and a neutered boar.
