These animals make wonderful pets either for children or for adults; they are very cute and funny. In captivity a cage with walls 30 cm high, open on top and having a minimum floor area of 3,000 square cm will be enough for one animal. A pair of animals will demand more space. The cage should be made of wood, plastic or metal. Don't use cedar; it is very dangerous for these animals. These are sociable creatures and get very well along with other animals. They are good natured and rarely bite.

The average life span of these animals is about 5-7 years, yet some individuals may live for as long as 12 years. Being herbivores, these animals feed mainly on vegetation; however they do need protein in their diet to keep them healthy. Domestic cavies should be fed with special mix, mash or cavy pellets. They should also have a daily supply of fresh fruit and vegetables in order to receive necessary amount of vitamin C.
