Pregnant Guinea Pig
A pregnant guinea pig photo looks pretty ballooned; some farms raise these little critters exclusively.
There may appear some problems during pregnancy. If a sow is bred for the first time after 7 months of age, she can have difficulties with delivery. More often in this case a cesarean section is required. If difficulties with delivery (dystocia) occur, veterinary help must be sought immediately. Overweight sows in their first or second pregnancy often suffer from pregnancy toxemia. It is a serious condition, the main signs of which are: lack of appetite, depression, weakness, reluctance to move, coordination loss, difficulty breathing, coma and death. Some sows may show no signs and suddenly die.

Pregnant Guinea Pig -
photo, farms
It is very important to separate sexually mature animals; the females may also be as aggressive as males and they also can fight for rank, but do not drive the weaker from the herd. The highest rank earns the right to go wherever and whenever they want. Females should be first bred between 3 and 7 months of age; as for males, so they should be 3-4 months old at their first breeding. Delaying of the first breeding can cause serious (sometimes life-threatening) problems. Gestation period of the females lasts an average for 63 days.
