You can keep these animals in wire cages or aquariums. Place the cage so that your cavy cannot be in drafts or direct sunlight. Do not place the cage near a vent for air conditioning or heat. If you choose an aquarium, you won't need a top on it, since these animals do not jump. You will have to provide your cavies with a water bottle that hangs from the side of the enclosure, not a bowl of water. As these animals do not produce vitamin C, special vitamins should be added to the water. And the last thing- buy at least two animals of the same sex, because cavies get lonely on their own.

These animals originated from the Andes Mountains region of South America. In the wild they live in burrows in mountains and grasslands. These rodents have compact bodies and no tale. There are 8 species of these animals. It is thought that they were first domesticated by the Indians of Peru. The Indians used them for food and as sacrificial offerings to their gods. In the 16th century, Dutch explorers introduced these animals to Europe. Nowadays, these animals are among the cutest popular small pets. They are easy to buy and not difficult to maintain.
