The first cavies were domesticated in about 5000 B.C. by the Incas. The first domesticated cavies were probably used for food. In the 1600’s, the Spaniards were the first Europeans to see these rodents. These animals were brought by Dutch merchants to Europe where they soon became popular pets with aristocrats. These animals have a friendly temperament with no tendency to bite what makes them perfect pets either for elderly or for children.
